This project stands out as a model of innovation in high-performance homebuilding, blending advanced construction practices, cutting-edge technologies, and thoughtful design strategies to create a residence that is not only energy efficient, but also resilient, smart, and future-ready. Located in Climate Zone 4C and designed to exceed the 2018 IECC energy code, this 3,260 sq. ft. home achieves a remarkable HERS/ERI Index of -5, with projected annual energy savings of over 20,500 kWh and utility bills of just $465 per year—a testament to the precision and performance behind every system.
One of the most innovative aspects of this project is its integrated energy ecosystem, centered around an 11.4 kW solar photovoltaic array paired with a 16 kWh PointGuard battery backup system. This battery is one of the first of its kind installed nationally and includes two-way EV charging, allowing energy to flow both to and from compatible electric vehicles. This vehicle-to-home capability adds backup duration and energy flexibility, turning the car into a dynamic asset in the home’s power strategy. Real-time monitoring, smart controls, and seamless grid interaction make this system a forward-thinking solution for reliability and sustainability.
The HVAC system also pushes the envelope with a Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat heat pump, capable of delivering high performance even in cold climates. With ducts and air handler entirely within conditioned space, performance is maximized, and energy loss minimized. Balanced ventilation is provided by a Broan AI Series ERV, which is programmed to meet ASHRAE 62.2 standards and operates independently to ensure consistent indoor air quality. Smart controls, including the Mitsubishi Kumo Cloud Wi-Fi thermostat, ensure residents have remote control over comfort and efficiency.
Adding another layer of intelligence and innovation, the home features the RIoT system—an integrated suite of IoT sensors and devices installed during construction to monitor key performance areas such as indoor air quality, water usage and leaks, energy consumption, and HVAC operation. Unlike plug-and-play devices, RIoT is hardwired into the home and begins transmitting real-time data as soon as internet service is live. This allows homeowners to track performance, receive alerts, and make informed decisions, bringing a new level of transparency, efficiency, and control to everyday living.
Framing is another area where innovation shines. We used Builders FirstSource Ready-Frame technology, a precision-cut, pre-assembled framing system that reduces on-site waste, speeds up construction, and enhances structural accuracy. Advanced framing techniques—such as 24” on-center spacing, open headers, and raised heel trusses—further reduce thermal bridging and improve wall performance, achieving R-23 wall insulation with a robust and efficient envelope.
Air sealing is tackled with a combination of traditional best practices and AeroBarrier technology, which automatically detects and seals even the smallest gaps down to human-hair width. This hybrid approach helped the home achieve an airtightness score of 1.02 ACH50, ensuring durability, comfort, and low energy loss.
Together, these innovations—from solar and battery integration to RIoT-enabled monitoring, high-efficiency mechanical systems, and precision framing—demonstrate a holistic, forward-thinking approach to homebuilding. This project sets a new benchmark for what’s possible in sustainable, smart residential construction.
