  • A National Certification program to organize and document your building science education;
  • Assure that you understand the "house-as-a-system" covering issues related to the topics of building green, energy efficient, healthy, safe, durable and affordable homes;                 
  • A marketing tool that demonstrates your commitment to better building performance through continuing education.

The EEBA Institute of Building Technology Certification requires an understanding of building science within 12-modules areas.  For those students interested in demonstrating their level of understanding through a hands-on project, the MasterBuilder Designation is available.

EEBA Institute of Building Technology Certification

  • Open to any industry professional 
  • 100 hours of course-work within 12 topic areas (Modules)
  • Upon completion, a minimum of 8-hours continuing education credits required per year to keep certification current
  • Course work to be completed within a 48-month time frame from original enrollment (Registration)

EEBA Institute of Building Technology MasterBuilder Designation

  • Requires completion of the Institute of Building Technology Certification
  • Requires submission of MasterBuilder application (Registration)
  • Requires $75 processing fee for the review of the MasterWork submission
  • Requires successful completion of MasterWork approved by EEBA Technical Review Committee
  • Upon completion, a minimum of 8-hours continuing education credits required per year to keep certification current

What is the difference between Certification and MasterBuilder designation?

Upon completion of 100 classroom/field credits at EEBA Certified CoursesInstitute students will receive an EEBA Institute of Building Technology Certificate of Completion.  Certification can take up to 3 years to complete.

Upon completion of the EEBA Institute of Building Technology Certification program a student may apply for MasterBuilder Designation. Candidates for MasterBuilder Designation must demonstrate their understanding of building performance issues through a hands-on project.  Projects are monitored by a member of the EEBA Technical Review Committee.  Upon successful completion of a MasterWork project the MasterBuilder Designation will be awarded. . MasterBuilder projects can take up to 1 year to complete.

What Courses Qualify and who provides the training?

All EEBA Houses That Work and Excellence In Building Conference courses qualify for EEBA Institute Credit.  Other organizations and conferences may submit their courses for Institute credit. 

Trainers of certified courses prescribe to a set of training standards and support the philosophy and criteria of the EEBA organization.

How are the courses selected?

Before a course can be certified, it must go through a technical review process. All qualified courses subscribe to EEBA climate specific criteria and building science standards. (Topics Categories)

What topic areas are covered in the IBT?
 

Building Science: 10 credits
Codes: 5 credits
Design: 10 credits
Site Applications: 10 credits
Envelope and Interior Structure: 10 credits
Finishes and Furnishings: 10 credits
Mechanical Systems: 10 credits
Sustainability: 5 credits
Indoor Environmental Health: 10 credits
Commissioning & Testing: 5 credits
Operation & Maintenance  5 credits
Business & Marketing: 10 credits

How are credits applied to each module?

An individual course may contribute credits to more than one module. For example: A Houses That Work session is worth 8-credits. Of those 8 credits, 2 credits are applied to each of the following modules: Building Science, Operation & Maintenance, Envelope & Interior Structure, and Mechanical Systems. If a course is worth a single credit, it may not be split between modules.

Of the 100 credits required a total of 95 credits are expected from classroom or online courses with the remaining 5 credits to be earned through field experience.

Can I receive professional CEU credits through the EEBA Institute?

Institute courses can qualify for professional CEUs in cooperation with professional organizations such as the National Association of Realtors (NAR), American Institute of Architecture (AIA), Home Energy Rater Certification, the American Lung Association’s Health House Project and others. All Houses That Work classes and Excellence in Building Conference sessions qualify for CEU credits. Check specific courses or conference for qualifying CEUs.

Where are courses offered?

With the ever-increasing time restraints felt by today’s building professional, the Institute offers both classroom and on-line options. The bulk of Institute courses can best be found at EEBA’s Excellence In Building Conference  EEBA's Houses That Work classes also qualify and are offered at regional sessions as well as within national conference programs.

Additional classroom sessions are offered at various training venues such as national and regional industry conferences; manufacturer and utility-hosted training programs, local homebuilder association classes and at US DOE/ Building America Program Series.

Through an educational partnership with distance learning specialists BuildIQ, Institute courses are offered on-line. Because of its availability 24/7, the courses are an attractive alternative.

How much does it cost to get an a Certificate/ Master Builder Designation?

Costs vary per class, location and host organization. Students can expect to pay between $1250 and $2600 to complete the process.

What steps do I need to take to enroll?

How can I track my progress?

Once registered, students are given a username and password that allows them to track their progress at their convenience.
