EEBA Certified Trainer
John Tooley is one of the nation's most respected innovators in
the area of building science technology. Because of his visionary ideas,
pioneering spirit, and many achievements, his work has received numerous
industry awards.
Recipient of Florida's Governors' Energy Award, Tooley has also been
honored with the Energy Efficient Building Association's coveted Joule
Award for his innovative contributions to the building industry. Florida
Power and Light distinguished Tooley for his valuable contributions to
its Duct Leakage Program, which received the National Energy Award. He
has received numerous commendations and has also been recognized for his
participation in program design and training for some of the largest
utilities and building programs in the nation.
Tooley first began his innovative approach to building design in 1980
when, as partner in Natural Florida Homes, he received a grant from the
U.S. Department of Energy to design and build two passively-cooled
houses in Orlando, Florida. Later Tooley owned and operated Natural
Florida Retrofit, a contracting, consulting, training and research
corporation. The firm provided thermographic scans, building failure
investigations, remediation plan development, consulting and contracting
services. National training was a result of an ongoing research program
and numerous building diagnostics.
Tooley has completed many notable projects in his career. He has
diagnosed and repaired over 5,000 residential buildings. He has
participated in residential weatherization of more than 10,000 houses.
He developed the standards and conducted the training for the design and
implementation of the duct diagnostic and repair programs of both
Advanced Energy and Florida Power.
Tooley discovered and researched the feasibility of many new methods
for making HVAC systems more efficient. One of the first to recognize
and explore the problems caused by pressure differentials, he began in
1986 to develop the standards and test protocols for mechanical air
distribution and interacting relationships — now known throughout the
industry as MAD-Air.
In addition to training manuals, Tooley has authored and co-authored
numerous scientific papers and articles. He joined Advanced Energy in
January 1996 as a building science consultant and senior trainer for
Advanced Energy's nationally recognized building science training
program.
