Off-Site Tours
All off-site tours are on day one of conference – Monday, September
28, 2009 – tours are included in the cost of the Day 1 daily
registration and the Full Conference Registration. All attendees
interested in taking part in any tour must select the desired tour when
registering for conference to be guaranteed a spot.
Tour I - Harvard Communities Stapleton Tour

Join Denver builder John Keith, Harvard Communities, to tour one of
his high performance homes in Stapleton, a premier sustainable
community. See and learn firsthand about Harvard's high performance home
construction techniques, including framing, insulation, moisture
management, HVAC design and installation, ventilation strategies and
photo voltaic applications. Discussion will include how these features
attract buyers, how Harvard's high performance homes have led to
continued sales success even in the down market, and how high
performance homes and their features influence the value perceptions of
home buyers.
The bus for Tour I loads at 8:30am and will depart the Denver
Marriott Tech Center at 9:00am. The bus will return to the Denver
Marriott Tech Center in time for the opening lunch.

Tour II - Hands on High Performance HVAC

Learn the fundamentals of designing, installing and commissioning a
high performance heating, ventilating and cooling system. See a variety
of systems, equipment types and controls in operation and learn how they
work, how they should be installed, and how to properly test for
performance. The knowledge gained will inform not only your choice of
HVAC system components and types, but improve your ability to ensure
system performance.
This two-stop tour begins with equipment ‘close-ups' at the advanced
training facility provided by Comfort Air Distributing. Numerous
stations will demonstrate and examine the operation of specific
equipment types, including a modulating (2-stage) furnace, a heat pump,
two-stage air conditioner, variable speed motor, and more, as well as
the range of controls necessary to a truly high performance system. The
sequence of operation will be demonstrated and each station will provide
the opportunity for focused Q & A discussion. Presenters will also
provide insights regarding HVAC innovations coming down the road.
Stop two of the tour will include the demonstration of a full
commissioning of a high performance HVAC system installed in a Harvard
Communities home at Stapleton, a premier sustainable community.

Marriott Tech Center at 8:30am. The bus will return to the Denver
Marriott Tech Center by 2:30pm. This tour includes lunch.

Tour III – Existing Homes - Home Performance with EnergyStar: The
Process; Auditing and Improvements

In 2009, Xcel Energy in Colorado adopted Home Performance with
Energy-Star as its vehicle for delivering energy-efficiency to
homeowners. With more than $800 per home in rebates for improvements and
another $500+ in discounted auditing and post-improvement inspections

capitalize on this, along with Federal tax credits worth $1,500 or more,

Tour IV - Builders Challenge Home Tour

Join U.S. Department of Energy's Residential Building Technologies
Team Leader Ed Pollock as we tour two Builders Challenge qualified homes
in Boulder and Denver.
First stop on the Builders Challenge tour is Solar Harvest, the first
Net Zero home in Boulder, and the personal residence of Eric Doub,
President of Ecofutures Building Inc. Learn about Ecofutures'
construction techniques that led to an impressive -10 HERS rating
including used solar thermal panels to heat water for the heating
system, a 6,000 gallon underground hot water tank salvaged from a dairy
farm, super-insulated walls, windows and ceilings and solar electric

Next,
we will tour a recently completed duplex in Denver's Washington Park
neighborhood. Denver-based Sean Smith and Company received not only a
39 on the Builders Challenge E-Scale, but was honored with a Gold LEED
certification for his duplex unit's in-floor radiant heating, wall
insulation containing 30 percent post consumer recycled glass and a heat
recovery ventilator.
