Our Philosophy

For over 29 years, EEBA has built a reputable foundation as the leading resource for information and education for sustainable building. Recently, the interest in sustainable design and building has grown exponentially among building professionals, educators and homeowners. New legislation and rating systems have created unprecedented demand for professionals that understand sustainable design and that can implement its principles in the construction of buildings and communities. EEBA's philosophy provides an overarching framework of principles, issues, technologies and history of the sustainable building movement to meet this demand.

Our History

A small contingent of building professionals representing the United States, Canada, and Sweden, gathered in Pine Island, Minnesota in early 1982 to develop criteria for the construction of buildings that were more energy efficient. These forward thinking pioneers created the Energy Efficient Building Association.

Over the years, the organization grew as the impact the building industry had on the environment was recognized. An unmatched under-standing of building science was embraced. EEBA members committed to be good stewards of the resources used in the construction of residential and light commercial buildings.

From this commitment and members' expertise, EEBA climate specific criteria was developed. The criteria provided a blueprint, based on regional climatic conditions, for improved building performance and quickly became the industry's leading document detailing the systems approach to new construction.

Through expanded educational venues, strong national alliances and a broad-based network of partners, EEBA meets the rapidly increasing educational and informational needs of the building science industry.

In 2008, the organization modified its name to the Energy and Environmental Building Alliance, to reflect strong partnerships and a commitment to advance common objectives and interests in sustainable building.

EEBA will continue to offer educational tools and services as they work towards building the future today.

A world where everyone can live in a healthy, safe, durable, energy efficient home.
